A storm rolls through the suburbs

I've become interested in recording the sound of rain here lately. My inspiration is mostly due to the timely discovery of this article [Sonic Fields Blog] describing the unique challenges involved with recording rain. it seems to be an abundant sound since the winter months in Georgia tend to come with lots of rainy days.

One Saturday evening I was working out in the garage, and heard some distant thunder approaching, it was my chance to try my hand at capturing a thunder storm!!

I scrambled to rig my Sony D50 to a C-Stand holding an umbrella and ran outside as the rain started pouring down. I quickly realized that the sound of the rain hitting the umbrella was going to ruin the ambiance of the recording. I scrambled to throw as many bath towels as I could over the umbrella and managed to record this very usable sound bite included bellow.
